The Waitsfield Selectboard, at its 10/12/20 meeting, adopted the following four amendments to the Traffic Ordinance:
#1 – Lowering the speed limit on Common Road from 35 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h.
#2 – Deleting a reference to Common Road from a section establishing a standard 35 m.p.h. speed limit on gravel roads.
#3 – Adding the “Stop” signs on either end of the covered bridge.
#4 – Replacing a reference to “selectman” with “Selectboard member.”
Amendments #1 and #2 combine to effectively lower the speed limit on Common Road from 35 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. The amendment is based upon the results of a traffic study conducted by Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission and included consideration of factors such as safety and the growing volume of non-motorized activity (walkers, runners, bicyclists, and horses).
Amendment #3 adds the “Stop” signs at either end of the covered bridge to the ordinance, enabling enforcement of any failure to come to a complete stop.
Amendment #4 replaces a dated reference.
The full text of the amendments may be examined by clicking this link (see pages 25 through 31), by requesting a digital version from the Town Administrator ([email protected]), or at the Waitsfield Town Offices at 4144 Main Street, Waitsfield, VT 05673, by appointment, due to COVID-19 protocols.
Citizens may petition for a vote to repeal the amendment at an annual or special meeting, as provided by 24 V.S.A. § 1973. The petition must include signatures from 5% of registered voters within the Town, and be filed within 44 days of the Selectboard’s action. The deadline for an appeal is 11/25/20; if no appeal is filed the speed limit change becomes effective on 12/11/20.
